- Description:
- Turn-of-the-twentieth century postcard image of the Landon Thomas residence in Summerville, Georgia. Located on Milledge Road, the Landon Thomas residence was built in the late 1800s and combined both Greek Revival and Italianate architectural elements. Throughout the 1800s, many Augustans maintained summer homes in what later became known as Summerville. Originally seen as a place for summer residence, Augustans began living in Summerville year-round after the introduction of electric street cars in the 1890s. Summerville was officially incorporated into Augusta in 1912.
Inscribed on verso: "Augusta, Ga., Nov. 5, 1910, Landon Thomas Home, Expect to get a letter from you tonight so will write only a postal. Am anxious to hear what you think of the plan. I think it will be grand. Went to town this morning. We are all well and happy. It is still cold. Lots of love--Ella."
Addressed to Mrs. Caroline M. Mayo, 24 Winter St. Orange, Mass.
