- Description:
- Early-twentieth century postcard image of golfers and spectators standing on and around the sand green of hole seventeen at Augusta Country Club in Augusta, Georgia. The original course, built in 1899, the Lake course, contained nine holes and featured sand greens. In 1902, the Lake course was expanded to include a full eighteen holes. By 1905, Augusta Country Club's popularity demanded that plans be drawn up for an additional eighteen hole course. The Hill course was completed in 1906. Both courses gained national recognition and were frequented by United States presidents Warren G. Harding and William Taft, in addition to John D. Rockefeller, Sr. and Georgia favorite, golf champion Bobby Jones.
