- Description:
- Early-twentieth century postcard image of golfers and spectators standing on and around an unidentified sand green at Augusta Country Club in Augusta, Georgia. The clubhouse appears in the background of the image. The original course, the Lake course, was built in 1899 and contained nine holes that featured sand greens. In 1902, the Lake course was expanded to include a full eighteen holes. By 1905, the Augusta Country Club's popularity demanded that plans be drawn for an additional eighteen-hole course; the Hill course was completed in 1906. Both courses gained national recognition and were frequented by United States presidents Warren G. Harding and William Taft, in addition to John D. Rockefeller, Sr. and Georgia favorite, golf champion Bobby Jones.
