Mrs. Mildred Yvonne Jones Rock quietly passed into her sunset, in the very
room in which she was born, at her home in Claxton, GA on August 13,
2012. She was born on October 3, 1932 to the late Pompey and Gewreka
Gay Jones; she is a granddaughter of Rueben Jones, an early resident of
Evans County.
At a young age, Mildred joined the St. John Missionary Baptist Church of
Claxton, GA. where she happily participated in the many activities of her
beloved church. In the early 60s, she moved to Brunswick, GA and trans-
ferred her religious affiliation to Zion Baptist Church. Both churches have
visited her numerous times during her illness to perform various functions
of her faith.
Mrs. Rock received her early education at the Evans County Training
School (1-6) and the Evans County High School (7-11). She was a mem-
ber in the last class that graduated after 11 years of elementary and sec-
ondary education; from 1953 to the present, students graduated from high
school after 12 years of study. Mildred received her undergraduate degree
from Fort Valley State College and her Masters degree from Michigan
State University, in addition to later graduate studies in youth guidance
counseling at Georgia Southern University.
Her career as an educator began in 1952 as a Junior High School teacher
in Ashburn, GA. where she met a fellow educator, Richard Pressley Rock,
whom she married in November, 1955. Mildred then, returned to her home
in Claxton, in the early 60s and taught physical education classes at Evans
County High School. In the late 60s, she joined her husband as an edu-
cator in the Glynn County Public School system, from which she retired in
1985. She was a guidance counselor for the Job Corps until her illness in
1993.
Mrs. Rock was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Zeta lota Omega
Chapter (Brunswick, GA) in 1979. Mildred served as President of the
Chapter in 1985-1986.
Her husband, Richard Pressley Rock, and her daughter La Mauryce
DeVaine Rock, preceded her in death. Her five siblings also preceded her
in death; James Randolph Jones, Clarise Jones, Rueben Jones, DeAlva
Jones, and Reno (Buzzy) Jasper Jones.
She leaves to cherish her memories: an adopted son, Lee Derrick
McArthur; a devoted cousin. Dr. Marcia Macon Moody; four nieces, Portia
(Rueben) Slappey, Pamela (Reno) Bolden, Schraundra (Reno) Sandy
Jones, Gewreka Lou (Reno) Josie Lou Jones, and one nephew, Carlton
Jones; and many other relatives and friends.
