Anderson,Eulogist Interment: Greenwood Cemetery Brunswick, GA Monday, August 20, 2012 At 1:00 PM Mrs. Mildred Yvonne Jones Rock quietly passed into her sunset, in the very room in which she was born, at her home in Claxton, GA on August 13, 2012. She was born on October 3, 1932 to the late Pompey and Gewreka Gay Jones; she is a granddaughter of Rueben Jones, an early resident of Evans County. At a young age, Mildred joined the St. John Missionary Baptist Church of Claxton, GA. where she happily participated in the many activities of her beloved church. In the early 60s, she moved to Brunswick, GA and trans- ferred her religious affiliation to Zion Baptist Church. Both churches have visited her numerous times during her illness to perform various functions of her faith. Mrs. Rock received her early education at the Evans County Training School (1-6) and the Evans County High School (7-11). She was a mem- ber in the last class that graduated after 11 years of elementary and sec- ondary education; from 1953 to the present, students graduated from high school after 12 years of study. Mildred received her undergraduate degree from Fort Valley State College and her Masters degree from Michigan State University, in addition to later graduate studies in youth guidance counseling at Georgia Southern University. Her career as an educator began in 1952 as a Junior High School teacher in Ashburn, GA. where she met a fellow educator, Richard Pressley Rock, whom she married in November, 1955. Mildred then, returned to her home in Claxton, in the early 60s and taught physical education classes at Evans County High School. In the late 60s, she joined her husband as an edu- cator in the Glynn County Public School system, from which she retired in 1985. She was a guidance counselor for the Job Corps until her illness in 1993. Mrs. Rock was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Zeta lota Omega Chapter (Brunswick, GA) in 1979. Mildred served as President of the Chapter in 1985-1986. Her husband, Richard Pressley Rock, and her daughter La Mauryce DeVaine Rock, preceded her in death. Her five siblings also preceded her in death; James Randolph Jones, Clarise Jones, Rueben Jones, DeAlva Jones, and Reno (Buzzy) Jasper Jones. She leaves to cherish her memories: an adopted son, Lee Derrick McArthur; a devoted cousin. Dr. Marcia Macon Moody; four nieces, Portia (Rueben) Slappey, Pamela (Reno) Bolden, Schraundra (Reno) Sandy Jones, Gewreka Lou (Reno) Josie Lou Jones, and one nephew, Carlton Jones; and many other relatives and friends.
