Know all men by these presents that we the undersigned Cherokee Indians and the descendants of Cherokees who have become citizens of the State of North Carolina hereby nominate constitute and appoint, our worthy friend William H. Thomas, who is an adopted Cherokee, and citizen of said State -- but now in Washington City representing our interest in the Treaties made with the Cherokee tribe of Indians [unclear text: by ] the United States -- our true and lawful attorney in fact, To presecute [prosecute] our claims for reservations granted to us ander [under] the Cherokee treaties of
1817 &
1819, before the present board of Commissioners or any other Board which may be appointed by the United States to settle the claims of the Cherokee Indians, also before the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Secretary of War, President of, & Congress of the United States, and in the event of recovery to receive and reiceipt [receipt] therefor [therefore] to the proper officers. And we further authorise [authorize] our said Attorney to employ one or more attorneys under him to aid in the prosecution of said claims to whom we authorise [authorize] a fair compensation to be paid. And in the event that our first named attorney shall deem it necessary for the recovery of said reservations he is hereby authorised [authorized] to institute suits in our names in the courts of the states or in the District Court of the United States and to prosecute the same for us until recovery is made; and if he deems it necessary to carry the suits by writ of error from the District Court to the Supreme Court of the United States at the City of Washington and to prosecute the same with power to employ such [unclear text: addition ] lawyers to aid him as may be deemed necessary. And we further authorise [authorize] our said attorney to act and do for us, and in our names all things which may become necessary in his opinion within the premises. And we for ourselves heirs and assigns hereby covenant and agree to and with the said Thomas his heirs and assigns that until the above business is completed this power of attorney shall not be changed or reworked hereby revoking all other powers of attorney which may have been given by any of us to any other person or persons. Hereby confirming and ratifying what our said attorney or attorneys may lawfully do therein in testimony we have hereunto set our hands and seals, this
