Col. Thomas --
Sir.
I have just returned from Ashville on business connected with my Moody suit. I had a private interview with Marck Erwin in reference to Indian affairs. He has been appointed by the Government as you are doubtless aware to investigate all matters which heretofore concerned the Cherokees. He request me to say to you not to sign any instrument which Johnson or Terrells may present to [added text: you ] . He showed all the evidence, copies of reports made by yourself, to-gether [together] with all other papers connected with the matter -- Also reports of Terrell &c [et cetera] since the close of the war upto [up to] the present time. He believs [believes] that Terrell has been working against you in the interest of other parties -- .

He says that from information gleaned from Officials at Washinton he is satisfied that the Goverment [Government] is well satisfied in regard to all the dealings you have had with the matter and that there is no doubt but you will be handsomely remunerated therefore -- He further says that the most or nearly all of the lands sold by Johnston he cannot hold
He will come to see [added text: you ] if he can find time before the next Federal Court at Ashville, but he is to return to Washington immediately
I would advise you to address him & request that he come out as I am satisfied that Marck will do ever thing [everything] he possible can do for you, if it does not conflict directly with his duties as District Attorney --
In Haste
Yours &
[Signed] M [unclear text: H ] Love
