Article of agreement made concluded and agreed upon between James W Terrell of the county of Jackson and state of North Carolina of the first part and Wm [William] H Thomas of the same county and state of the second part witnesseth That Whereas the said Terrell has for a considerable length of time been employed by said Thomas in carrying on the Tanning business at Qualla Town in said county the amount of his compensation being dependent upon the amount of hides tanned but in order to reduce the amount of compensation to certainty and to provide a certain income which is better adapted to said Terrells condition -- having lately married it is therefore agreed between the parties that instead of said Terrells being paid as heretofore agreably [agreeably] to the number of hides tanned that he is to attend to the Tanning business as here to fore [heretofore] when desired to do so by said Thomas and perform his duty as well as heretofore in

carrying on the said Tanning business said Terrell is also to the post office kept in said store and to the store or settling accounts where desired to do so by said Thomas, also in aiding said Thomas in making settlements with the Indians and making payments of interest due to the North Carolina Cherokees, and such other business as said Thomas may desire him to attend to that he is capable of and give said Thomas the proceeds of his labor for one year from the first day of this month. In consideration thereof the said Thomas is to find said Terrell a house to live in rent free and a garden of at least half an acre to cutivate [cultivate] also to be rent free, also ten cords of fire wood [firewood], and at the end of the year three hundred dollars deducting said Terrells support and account for store goods and the balance said Thomas is to give the said Terrell credit on his and [unclear text: Wm Tarley ] s notes. And the said Terrell when absent attending to any of the

above business is to be boarded by the said Thomas or have his reasonable expenses paid, said Terrell if desired to do so by said Thomas is to board two of his hands at one dollar per week -- -- or to include himself, said Thomas to amount at that rate for the meals his hands eats then an amount to be kept for that purpose rating three meals per day. and said Thomas is also to permit said Terrell to keep a milk cow in his pasture.
