Dear Thomas.
I have recd. [recieved] from the Treasury five drafts, under Mr. Whittlesey's decision, amounting in all to $359.44, which closes up the payments due us under that decision, I enclose a power of attorney, which you will please execute & return to me, to enable me to draw the money.
On my return from the South, I found your declining to send me the power of attorney I have previously asked for, because of some decision of the auditor, in relation to deceased Indians. I did not answer immediately because I did not know where my letter would find you [unclear text: sooner ] than in Raleigh, & because I was in great haste to reach N. [New] York The decision, to which you refer is clearly wrong, if any such has been made -- but it seems to

me so preposterous that I doubt that your information is correct. -- But if such a decision has been made, we can certainly & easily have it overruled, as soon as you come on.
In the mean time [meantime] I beg that you will send me at once the enclosed power, duly executed, that I may pay your note, it having been a great [unclear text: source ] of mortification to me that it could not be taken up sooner.
When will you be here? If not soon, I will. if you desire it, look into the decision, to which you refer, & have no doubt of being able to have it overruled.
