Capt. Henry Grady [unclear text: Rossville ] po [post office] valley river NC
Dear Sir,
The causes which have lead to my long delay here, I presume you have been informed of by the communications addressed to the Cherokees at your office. since these were written nothing has occurred to change my opinion as to the probable time I will yet be detained here
your claim on the United States for the sum of $506.00 has been collected which you will charge to my account. Upon reflection I am inclined to think I gave you no receipt for this claim and to provide for the uncertainties to which all are liable the above is given.
I have enjoyed good health since here and am at present in good health. I am in hopes in a short time I shall have the pleasure of seeing you all again and to such as may think proper to enquire respecting me give my respects to them.

yours &c [et cetera]
[Signed] WHT [William Holland Thomas]
