- This is a letter dated December 10, 1799 from John Milledge (U. S. Representative, 1792-1793, 1795-1799, and 1801-1802; and Governor of Georgia, 1802-1806) to Secretary of State Horatio Marbury in Louisville. Milledge mentions his earlier request for a copy of the Indian certificate to (John ?) Galphin's estate. He describes the book in which he believes the document should be found, and he asks Marbury to search for it and send it to William Stephens in Savannah.

Dear Sir
I wrote you from Augusta, some time past, and also requested my friend S. Jones esqr. [esquire] to procure from your Office a copy of the Indian certificate to Mr. Galphin's estate, it is a paper I am much in want of. You may recollect that last Jany. [January] I obtained a Copy and got the Testimonial of the Govr. [Governor] and great Seal affixed to it. Mr. Jones writes me he assisted you in making search, but could not find any traces of it, but found that in favor of [unclear text: Raes ] Elbert & Co. [Company] the only clue that I can give you, is that I believe, it is recorded in the same book, with that of [unclear text: Raes ], Elbert & Co [Company], and near at the close of the book [deleted text: [illegible text] ] you may remember with great difficulty I found it, it not being Alphabeted and I persevered in Searching from my own knowledge of its being recorded, having carried it

to the office myself in Augusta, and present when it was entered, and took possession of the original after being properly Certified, it not being in my hands, know nothing of the pages, [deleted text: [illegible text] ] and book it refers to, I remember well on finding it last year you entered it immediately in one of the Alphabet books -- I will thank [added text: you ] again to Search and flatter myself from what I have mentioned that you will be able to find it, and have to request you will loose [lose] no time in transmitting the Copy to me, by some safe hand, or the post, directed to the care of Wm. [William] Stephens esqr. [esquire] Savh. [Savannah] as it is of great consequence to [deleted text: [illegible text] ] [added text: my interest ] that I should be in possession of that paper in All this month --
