Your letter [deleted text: by Express ] enclosing an election return of a volunteer company of Franklin County designed for the Cherokee service has been recieved [received] by the hands of Mr Mitchell
I regret very much that the Governor is unwell and [deleted text: therefore unable to ] [added text (appears to be different ink): cannot ] answer you [added text (appears to be different ink): in ] person [deleted text: ally ] . I am directed by His Excellency to say to you that the requisition made upon him by the President of the U. States for eleven volunteer companies for the Cherokee service to be drawn from other counties than those in the Cherokee country has been filled Orders have already been issued to eleven companies to march into the Cherokee counties and there is now no demand for your services.
Accept the compliments of the governor for the cheerful tender you have made of the services of yourself and company.
