Head Quarters Army of the South Fort Fanning
April 14, 1840.
"To the Hon: [Honorable] J. R. Poinsett
Secry: [Secretary] of War
Sir.
"As I informed you the
7 of March would be the [unclear text: call ] Capt Barnum Comg [Commanding] the troops around the Okefanoke Swamp was instructed to make enquiry as to the presence of Indians in the Okefanoke Swamp as reported to you by the Governor of Georgia on the representation of Capt Knight and I now enclose a copy of Capt Barnums report to Colonel Twiggs dated the
23 of March with copies of reports made to him enclosed therein, which came yesterday to hand. By these communications it will be seen that the report as made by Capt Knight was entirely without foundation -- "
