- This is an extract from a letter to an unknown recipient from E.K. Barnum at Fort Moniac (Baker County, Florida), dated April 5, 1840, relating to the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). Barnum reports that he has found no signs of Indians anywhere nearby. He refers to information from Lieutenant Rain regarding the search for positive signs of Indians on Suwanooche Creek. Rain reported that the local inhabitants were completely unable to substantiate their claims of Indian presence in the area.

Head Quarters, Okefenokee Dist. [District] Fort Moniac E.F. [East Florida]
5 April 1840
[added text (appears to be different ink): " ] I have the honor to transmit herewith a Field return of Troops in the Okeefenoke District for the Month of
March 1840
No signs of Indians have been discovered within the district since my last report.
Capt Bird reports from Fort Gilmer dated yesterday that "Lieut Rain returned a few days since from a scout on the Suwanootchee- he states that he requested the inhabitants of that place to shew [show] the signs of Indians, as likewise the stock which they reported had been killed. he says that the [they] failed completely, to shew [show] any sign [added text (appears to be different ink): " ]
