I Nathan Norton first Lieutenant of Captain Birds company Florida Mounted Volunteers, do hereby certify that I was in command of the Post of Fort Gilmer, Geo. from the
second day of December 1839 to the
31st day of January 1840, that I made scouts from said Post frequently during that period up the Suwanootchee creek, and in the direction of Cox's hammock on the west side of the Okefanokee, that I never made a discovery of any fresh signs of Indians, or saw any thing to induce the belief that Indians had visited that part of the country for some months previous. I have this day heard a letter read to be by Capt. E K Barnum U.S. Army said to be a copy of one from Levi J. Knight of Lowndes County to the Governor of Georgia. I have never heard of any cattle [deleted text: of ] [added text (appears to be different ink): or ] hogs being missed by any of the inhabitants on the Suwanootchee or Jones Creek and I believe the statement made by Levi J Knight to Govr. [Governor] McDonald to be greatly exaggerated if not entirely destitute of truth
Given at Fort Moniac, this
15th day of March 1840
(Signed)
[Signed] Nathan Norton 1st Lieut Fla Ma [Militia]
