To his Excellency Charles J McDonald
Sir
I required Capt. Johnson & Morgan to meet with their Companies on the 23 Inst [Instant] and I requirerd [required] of them to make oath of the time served by them and their Companies they have returned me their Rolls and I examined their Companies and the enclosed copies of affidavits is attached to the Rolls, the strength of Capt. Johnsons is, Captain first & second Lieutenants - four serjents [sergeants] and four Corporals, and Ninety Eight privates which he returns on the Rolls, as having served some forty five Days and some Ninety days Captain Morgan Rolls a Captain first & second Lieutenants four Serjants [Sergeants] and four Corporals and seventy seven privates all returned as having served Ninety days except Two men one returned five and the other six days I would be glad you would send by the bearer printed Rolls and I will cause them to fill up the Rolls and append such affidavits to the Rolls as you may think necessary to be administered to the officers to prove the service performed. And I will get the officers together and cause them to make oath and I shall be in Milledgeville the Last of
March, when I can return them to yours Excellency, Enclosed I send you the Copy of a Communication I Adressed [Addressed] to you on the 15th Inst [Instant] but as no mail has reached here for the Last three weeks I, fear, you will not get them soon your Letter of which I Received a Copy by the house of Mr Huchingson has not Reached here yet

Personally came Capt John J Johnson before me and being only sworn saith that the Rolls presented to Genl [General] Levi J Knight Exhibits the true state of his Company of mounted men ordered into the service by Genl [General] Knight and the time Charged for was actually performed and not intended as a fraud on the state of Georgia or the Government of the United States this

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication dated 2nd Inst [Instant] enclosing the Copy of a Letter addressed to me on the 14th Ulto [Ultimo] by the hand of [unclear text: Mr ] Hutchingson in the Copy you state you have received no acknowledgement [acknowledgment] of a Letter to me and a packet to Col Worth I enclose the Copy of a Letter I addressed to you on the
29th Decr [December] in answer to the Letter Refered [Referred] to Mr Cohen informs me he proceded [proceeded] to Camp Fanning in Florida Where he [illegible text]
1 Jany [January] the officer in Command would not permit him to go on with the Communications to Col Worth but took Charge of it and informed him that an express under a guard was sent Once a week from there to Col Worth at Tampa Bay and that he would take the earliest oppertunity [opportunity] to send the packet forwarded by your Excellency to the Col, from the time I received your Excellencys communication dated
23rd Novr [November] untill [until] to day I have continued my orders to Capt Johnson & Morgan, to keep in active opperation [operation] and I am astonished that Capt Johnson shoud [should] Report to you that he can discover no Indian sines [signs], as he reports to me constantly that sines [signs] are seen on Jones Creek and Indian Swamp Near Sawanoochy, I have in obedience to your order sent this day to Capts Johnson and Morgan to discharge their Companies, but with due Deference with the Secretary at War I do not think that the frontier of Georgia has that protection which he thinks so ample and the enclosed Copy of a Letter from Capt Morgan, will show you that the Country is still annoyed by the Indians, I went in person with Capt Johnson and Morgan in
[added text: the Last of ] December to Sawannee and up the Oakefanokee Swamp as high as Reed Creek 15 miles below Coxes hammack I saw sines [signs]

of Indians in Two places on toms Creek a prong of sawanoochy sometimes Called Indian swamp we found a camp in an Island [deleted text: [illegible text] ] [added text: about 6 or 8 in Number ] had been left about five days we thoroughally [thoroughly] searched the swamp but could not find, them and on Jones' Creek I saw where they had Killed a heifer about Two years old Cut off the flesh and Left the skeleton had been done about Two days - there was a small partie [deleted text: s ] [party] and imposible [impossible] to follow them as the Country is such no track or trail can be followed unless it is used for some time or by a great Number, I hope your Excellency will again try to have a force stationed between sawannee & Alappaha, two attacks has been made in that section and no Regular force has as yet even [unclear text: visited ] the place where the depredations was committed The season of the year is approaching when it will be attended with Considerable Loss to the Militia [added text: to ] order them out and if some more protection is not afforded the Country [deleted text: [illegible text] ] [added text: is in considerable Danger ], I ordered Capt Johnson & Morgan to keep continually in the field untill [until] they might take or drive the enemy out of the Country I will proceed without delay and ascertain without dout [doubt] what service they & their men has performed report to you with such Testimony as I may be able to obtain Your Letter of which I have the Copy has not reached here yet. I presume it is owing to the high waters. the mail does not pass Constantly -
