To his Excellency &c [et cetera]
Sir
You have been informed by this time I presume of the intention of a portion of our citizens in this county to organize a volunteer corps, and that an application has or will be made for a stand of arms for their use -- I address you upon this subject, for the purpose of stating, to you the anxiety and actual necessity which exists among us for a stand of arms, = We were previous to the last Creek War, in possession of a stand, and the drafted men, took possession of them and carried [added text: them ] to Alabama, and on their announcement through their commanding officer of their readiness of service, [unclear text: their ] being at the same time, several other companies, unprovided with arms, but who had been in Columbus some time previous to the arrival of the Jones County men, and had reported themselves ready, with the exception that they were without arms -- upon this, the arms belonging to Jones County were transferred to another company, and after the difficulties

ceased, the arms were turned over to the state as unfit for use --
I state this matter, because we have formed as many as two companies previous to this and failed in getting arms, = we reported ourselves to your predecessor and [added text: to ] the last application we received no reply -- Now we are ready to comply with the terms of the law in every respect and do not wish any informality in our application to be the cause of another disappointment= So you will confer a favour [favor] on me individually if you will let me know if there is anything necessary to be done that has not been done, - as there exists a great deal of anxiety [illegible text] us about this matter I should like to know from you by return mail if it is not too much trouble to you
Yours &c [et cetera]
