- Letter dated February 26, 1841 from Samuel Stewart to Georgia Governor Charles J. McDonald (1839-1843), pertaining to regiment service in accordance with an act of 1837. The act called for the formation of regiments to protect settlers in the Cherokee country and removal of Cherokees and Creeks residing within the limits of Georgia. As a member of this regiment, Stewart was assigned the special duty of investigating citizens' claims of Indian hostilities before regiments were deployed. He asks to be reimbursed for his services, particularly his travel expenses.

I take the Liberty to address you Concerning A few Days Survises Rendeard [Services Rendered] the State of Georgia as Comd- Col [Commanding Colonel] of A Redgment Raisd [Regiment Raised] under an act of
1837 for the protection of the Settlers of the Cherokee Nation In Georgia In an order Issued By his Excelency [Excellency] George R. Gilmer Dated
April 5th 1838 he Made it My Speciel [Special] Duty to Investigate well all Rumers [Rumors] of Dang. [Danger] and to See that there was actual Danger of the Indians Becomg [Becoming] hostile Before I orderd [ordered] out any part of the Ridgment [Regiment] from the cituation [situation] of the Companys [Companies] Raisd [Raised] as they was In Eleven Countys [Counties] and the frequent petitions Sent to Me from Different parts of the Nation By the Citizans [Citizens] to place Troops in to prtect [protect] them from the threatng [threatening] Danger I coud [could] not [deleted text: Determine ] asseretan [ascertain] the facts [deleted text: I ] wheather [whether] [added text: [unclear text: there ] ] Was Danger as my orders Bound me to Do In any other way than To [unclear text: Repair ] to the place In person and Make the Necesseary [Necessary] Investigations this I Did in Evry [Every] Case and kept [deleted text: ac ] an account of the time Spent In those Investigations I Spent fourty [forty] five Days for whitch [which] time if you think I shoud Reseave [should Receive] pay [deleted text: for ] I Will place the account In proper form and send it for [illegible text] if you Will [deleted text: Be ] Give Me your vius [views] on it in answer to this Leter [Letter]
