His Excellency Charles J. McDonald
Sir
As my time of service Expires on the
19th of February and I have not been able to assertain [ascertain] whether or not any arangements [arrangements] are made for to continue my company for a longer Term I thought best to adress [address] Your Excellency on the subjet [subject] . The company are Extremely anxious to know if thare [their] services will be wonting [wanting] for a longer Term as the Crop season will be close at hand they are anxious to make those arangements [arrangements] for the service if Required the Inhabitants are also Extremely axious [anxious] to know if a Guard will be kep [kept] to afford them protection as thare [there] is no doubt of thare [there] being Indians around the [unclear text: Samp [Swamp] ] from the Reports of Captain Jernagan Capt Jernagan with a small detachment of his men found sign of Indians on the South Side of the Swa [added text: m ] p some five days sinse [since] followed the Trail some four miles in the Swamp overtook three woriors kild [warriors killed] Two and Suposed [Supposed] mortally wounded the other he also Reports more Signs in the Same Neghburhood [Neighborhood]

Should companys [companies] not be continued in Service the Inhabitants will again be left Exposed to Indian depredations
Will Your Excellency please write me as Early as practicable whether arrangements has been made to continue the companys [companies] if so for what lenth [length] of time as I before Stated to Your Excellency my Self and Company would prefer Six month in sted [instead] of three Could such arangements [arrangements] be made the Company will be Inredanys [In readiness] to Enter for the next Term on the day thare [their] Term Expires an [and] would prefer doing so
