To his excellency George R. Gilmer --
I address you makeing [making] an enquiry of you concerning four men that was discharged from my command in the Cherokee campaign of
1838 -- without pay and according to an act of the legislatur [legislature] of
1838 -- paying Soldiers for service that had been rendered that they had not been paid for. Thos [illegible text], John Kilpatrick, Wm [William] Murphy Senr & Wm [William] [deleted text: [illegible text] ] Murphy Junr- and they prosecuting their case before the agents that was appointed to examine those accounts, with what they could establish in regard to the service that they rendered, through [illegible text] [deleted text: [illegible text] ] and they wish to Know, by your addressing me with a few lines, what is the issue and would be the issue- if the thing was carried on according to the Act So passed of
