His Excellency George R. Gilmer
Sir
feeling a solicitude to discharge faithfully all the duties that pertain [deleted text: s ] to any Offices which I may accept, either express or implyed [implied] and as it is a matter of doubt whether it is my duty to attend the reviews and Inspections of the Adjutant general within my Brigade, I have thought proper to submit the question to your Excellency. I take this Occasion to say to you as I have done your Predecessor that should circumstances render it necessary to call into the service of the State in the Cherokee Country an Officer of my grade, an appointment from your Excellency to that service would be as gratifying to me as it would be honourable [honorable] .
Very Respectfully your Obt. [Obedient] servant.
[Signed] Gustavus Hendrick
