Head Quarters, Army of the South Volusia, Florida
Decr [December] 9th 1836
Sir,
I had the honor to address your Excellency, in
October, on the subject of a Regiment of twelve months volunteers, which Major Nelson proposed to raise; but from the difficulties of communicating between the different Posts in this Country & with the interior, I am apprehensive that my letter may not have reached you, or that your reply may have been lost -- If that Regiment has been raised, it is important that it join as soon as practicable -- the turn of service of the Tennessee Brigade will expire in a few days, and I shall then have only a few hundred men to cover this whole country -- By a fortunate capture of an Indian and about forty negroes, on the 3rd inst [instant], I have obtained a knowledge of the positions of the several chiefs black, and red, with their followers; but I fear the principal force will be out of the field before any important object can be accomplished, or blow struck -- With the Georgia Regiment referred to, I would maintain the offensive and strike the several detachments in succession; and perhaps, by the middle of
January, close the war --
This you may be assured is a negro, not

an Indian war; and as such it is of the utmost importance to the South that it be instantly closed --
I hope your Excellency will excuse the trouble I give you; but your active efforts to advance the service during the last summer, induced me to appeal to you without hesitation, and to request that the Regiment, if not already raised or authorized, be called into service as soon as possible and ordered to Florida --
I would be glad to have the opinion of your Excellency whether the troops under Major Dearborn can be spared from the defence [defense] of the lower counties of Georgia --
With high consideration & respect I have the honor to be
Yr. [Your] Excellency's mo. obdt. servt. [most obedient servant]
