- Major General Thomas S. Jesup informs Georgia Governor William Schley (1835-1837) that he has arrived at headquarters in Apalachicola (Franklin County, Florida) to supervise the organization and preparation of troops that will be fighting against the Seminoles (probably in the Second Seminole War, 1835-1842). Jesup says that he has sent Lieutenant W. Crab to northwest Georgia to muster a volunteer regiment and accompany them to Florida as quartermaster. He asks Schley for his official sanction of these actions and further informs the governor that the marines leave shortly for Tampa Bay. This letter is associated with tcc596.

October 25th 1836
Sir,
Since my letter to your Excellency of the 19th instant, I have been obliged to visit this place to hasten the movement of the troops, and make arrangements for an adequate supply of subsistence, forage, and the means of transportation for the troops about to commence operations against the Seminoles. I found Lt. W. Crab here and have sent him to the North Western Counties of Georgia to muster into service the regiment proposed to be raised by Major Nelson, and if raised, to accompany it as quarter master and commissary to Florida.
I hope your Excellency will afford the sanction of your authority to the [unclear text: raising ] of the regiment, and its immediate movement to the scene of action.
