His Excellency Wm. [William] Schley.
Dear Sir,
My brother, who has just returned from Florida, informs me that genl. [general] Clinch has resigned his commission, and retired to St. Mary's in this State. He declares him to be a very popular and a very able commander, and suggests the propriety of calling him into the immediate service of the State. It appears to me that some such measure is absolutely necessary. If it can be properly done, by consent of our officers, or otherwise, I presume you will concur with us in the propriety of immediately addressing genl. [general] Clinch and our officers on

the subject. The case admits of no delay: something should at once be done to drive back and Subdue the Savages, and to prevent thoughts from arising in the minds of our foes, foreign or domestic, civilized or Savage.
Yr. obdt. Serv. [Your obedient Servant]
[Signed] Wm. [William] Turner
P.S. Would not brevet [unclear text: of ] genl.C. [general Clinch] & consent of other generals, enable you to employ him?
[Signed] W.T. [William Turner]
