Circumstances render it necessary that I should have the use of a communication for a while which was lodged with you by Colo [Colonel] Absalom Bishop found in the possession of John Howard Payne & alleged to have been written by that gentleman Be pleased to transmit it to my address at Washington City under an envelope addressed to Elbert Herring Esqr. Commissioner of Ind Affs [Indian Affairs]
I take the liberty to ask the favour [favor] of you to read & deliver to Colo [Colonel] Hansell a letter herewith enclosed & use all the influence you can if any be necessary to get him to answer it at an early period fully
I also send another addressed to the Honl [Honorable] W [William] H Underwood which I hope you will read and enclose to him wherever he may be The information desired is highly important in disposing finally of the Cherokee question and also

in satisfying the demands of justice in a controversy between Judge White & myself
