Tallahassee
7 Jany [January] 1836
D [Dear] Sir
Arrivals this evening from our little army show a smart conflict on the
31. Dec. [December] between our troops and the Indians The force of the latter was 400, with about 100 armed negros [negroes] [unclear text: their ] loss about 50 or 60, and ours 6 or 8 killed & 40 or 50 wounded. Most of the Militia being engaged but for a very short time, have returned home, having left the ground for that purpose, on the night of the [illegible text] . The Indians doubtless from this circumstance will become insperited [inspirited], & may be encouraged to make assault along our frontiers, & even upon yours. I do not know that there is enough in this apprehension to authorise [authorize] you to call out the Militia of Georga [Georgia] ; but if this may not be officially done, could you not unofficially induce volunteers to turn out, for 60 or 90 days. an army advancing from Geoga [Georgia], or the north, so as to unite some where on the Suwonnee river with the force that might proceed from this section of County, might have strong influence & effect with those savages: To march a weak force serves but to invite attack, & encourage opposition. The best & cheapest mode will be, to send a sufficiently strong force at once. I have so written to the Sec [Secretary] of war to night and urged him to make a requisition on your State, but if consistent with yr. [your] public duty you could encourage & send forward a force to our relief, it would be exceedingly desirible [desirable], & I beg yr. [your] attention to it. The US govt. could not omit to recognise [recognize] the patriotic endeavor made by you
