- James Cartlidge (or Cartledge), an Inferior Court justice in Columbia County, Georgia, writes to Georgia Governor George R. Gilmer (1829-1831, 1837-1839) on February 14, 1831 to report that a local man was elected to two surveyor offices and inquire into the legality of this. He mentions that as District Surveyor, the surveyor elect will be surveying the Cherokee lands acquired under a late act of the state legislature.

Dear Sir
I write for information. the Situation of this county is such. Our county Surveyor (whose Service expires in
January next) -- became a candidate for district Surveyor to survey the cherokee lands under the late act of the legislature. he was elected as you will see from the returns forwarded you -- the information I want is to know from your excellency his opinion in relation to the same. whether Mr Stephen Draw can hold both appointments -- to wit. The office of County Surveyor & that of a district Surveyor
