Hickory Grove
May 17th 1802
Sir
When I received your Excellencys orders of the 8th Inst. [Instant] I was on the road [unclear text: to Court ] between Washington & my house consequently I did not acknowledge the receipt of them by the Express as he was unwilling to turn back. Some few days after I wrote Col Harris as follows "

By the orders which I have rec'd [received] from the Commander in Chief I understand that you are directed to [illegible text] with military force as well for the purpose of affording the necessary protection to the frontier of Jackson as for preventing our Citizens from crossing the line between us & the Indians.
Whereupon I have to observe

that in case it should require a greater force for this purpose then [than] what you are Authorized to draw out of your immediate command you will please inform me as in that event I shall give such aid as may be required to accomplish this measure. - It is certainly essential that the depredations and intrusions on both sides should be checked and Government having interposed for this purpose (and in my opinion very properly) there ought to be no time lost in obtaining her wishes and the more particularly as a continuation of these ruptures may have a tendency to prevent a negotiation which is on the way with the Creeks for the extinguishment of their claim to the Oakemulgee lands as well as to restore the Tallasee County. -- In your plan of operation for effecting this object care ought to be taken not to incur unnecessary expence [expense] .-
Any support that rests with me

to be given in order to a complete performance of the Executive will on this subject shall be readily afforded; At the same time I shall lament the occasion requiring it and it is to be hoped that these ends may be annexed without employing much military force if any and particularly as relates to our own Citizens.- They must view with concern the consequences already produced from the lines being cros,d. [crossed] -- If they would have patience a little time might probably afford them an opportunity of peaceably occupying the ground their so anxious to possess
"
I have heard of no further depredations on our frontier; the child that was said to have died of its wounds I have learnt [learned] had recovered so that there was but one killed.- some families

Note
I should have written Col Harris some sooner but he was hourly expected at the Supr [Superior] Court which was sitting in Wilkes at the time the Express arrived and I was desirous to have an interview with the Colonel on the subject of carrying your Excellencys orders into effect. --
