- This document is a letter from William Gibson at St. Marys, Georgia to Governor of Georgia David B. Mitchell (1809-1813, 1815-1817), dated September 7, 1816. Gibson requests that the Governor forward a list of the slaves recaptured during a battle at Apalachicola so that planters in the area can determine if any of their slaves were recovered. Gibson refers to Colonel Duncan Clinch, who attacked the runaway slaves at an abandoned British fort (often referred to as the Negro Fort) on the Apalachicola River with an army of American and Creek Indian forces in July of 1816. Gibson also inquires about the status of the property of a deceased citizen some of whose slaves are thought to be within the limits of the Indian nation.

Dear Sir
Permit me to trouble you with a request that you will be so obliging as to have forwarded to our County a list of the Negroes taken by Colo [Colonel] Clinch at Apalachicola, as there are several of our planters who have lost property of that description, and have made enquiries concerning it, and I am also interested in the Estate of [unclear text: F.P. Fatio ] decd. [deceased] who has in the Indian Nation forty nine Negroes besides the increase of a part since the [unclear text: Year ]
