New Orleans
4th May 1799
Sir
I am sure you will pardon the liberty I take in addressing you on a subject that interests one of our fellow Citizens, when I inform you that my reason for troubling you was an opinion that a letter to your address wou'd [would] go safer than it woud [would] to a private character.
Yesterday his Excelly Gov.r [Excellency Governor] Gayoso delivered into my care, a negro Boy who says his name is John White, and that he is the property of Mr. Jas. [James] Mumford of Savanah, he relates that he was taken by the Creek Indians, last winter two years, from whom he escaped, about 2 weeks past, that he reached the shores of the mississippi where he was taken on board an Illinois boat, brought to this place and given up to the Gov.r [Governor]
If you [missing word: have ] knowledge of his master
