- This document is a letter from William Melton to Georgia Governor Jared Irwin, dated December 13, 1797. Melton has heard that the Superintendent of Indian Affairs and unnamed Indians are going to be running the boundary line based on the New York treaty, and Melton asks Irwin to consider him for a position assisting in this work. The Treaty of New York was negotiated between the Creek Nation and the United States in 1790; it is not clear that this is the treaty to which Melton refers.

Sir
I am informd [informed] the Surperentend [Superintendent] of Indions [Indians] Affiars [Affairs] togather [together] with the Indion [Indian] to Run the line Agreable [Agreeable] to the New york treaty are to be in Shortly for that purpose -- and where as you are invested with power to appoint three Citizens of the State of Georgia on the part of this -- If your Excellency have not Appointed them as yet -- and think I will fill that place as one of the old georgians
