His Excellency Governor Jared Irwin
Greensborough
August 5th 1796
Sir! [added text (appears to be different ink and hand): 7 ]
I have the honor of informing your Excellency that I am now returned from mustering the Sundry Detachments of militia Infantry & Spyes [Spies] garisonned [garrisoned] at the different posts, from and including Fort Twiggs up to Fort [unclear text: Maurice ], and that I have discharged or retained into the Service of the United States the Detachments of Militia Infantry, agreably [agreeably] with your Excellency's orders to me of the
28th of June last past, within aforesaid limits.
I am now occupyed [occupied] in making the duplicate & triplicate muster & pay-rolls & expects daily to receive Captain Girardeau's report & vouchers, for the musters of the militia Infantry & Spyes [Spies], from and including Doctor's Town up to Fort Fidius -- I had wrote to that Officer from Louisville early in July, and have again a few days ago by express from this place, by the way of Carr's Bluff; I am as yet without any acknowledgment of his having received either & without any report from him on the Subject, which gives me Some uneasiness -- However, in the interim, I shall be employed in making & distributing the blank forms of Returns alluded to in your Excellency's orders to me of aforesaid date, which will take me some weeks; before that time expires, I hope Captain Girardeau will have acted on his orders & Sent me his report & vouchers; immediately after the receipt of which,

I shall have the honor of attending on your Excellency at Louisville.
The people on the Western frontiers of this State feels very sensibly the desappointment [disappointment] of the failure of the Treaty with the Creek Indians, with regard to the land contemplated to have been purchased but I have heard from very few [added text: any ] illiberal reflexions [reflections] on the gentlemen who were engaged in it, on behalf of the State; and hardly any mention made of an attempt to force Settlements over the temporary line (as was expected by Some) -- I am confident that if no influential character [unclear text: Starrs ] the people, any illegal measures will hardly be thought of on this object.
I have the honor to remain with profond [profound] respect, Your Excellency's Most Humble & most obedt. [obedient] Servant.
[Signed] Jonas Fauche A:G: [Adjutant General] P.S. Cornet Montgommery of Captain Girardeau's Troop of Dragoons informed me that the Cavalry guards at Forts Washington, Berrien & Irwin amounted to 35 commissioned, non-commissioned officers & Dragoons.
