To his Excellency Governor Telfair
The petition of a number of the Inhabitants of Greene County Sheweth [Shows], that the Town of Greensborough (being but about four miles on a direct line from the Oconee River) is much exposed to be sacked and burnt by the Indians who are dailey [daily] committing depredations almost in sight of said Town and as it is the only place where stores of any consequences are kept and the Indians from their perfect knowledge of said place have it much in their power to make an attack with every advantage, It being the Capital of the County, the publick [public] Buildings; & records here, together with several stores, and, between Twenty and thirty dwelling houses; It will undoubtedly become an object.
We conceive it our duly [duty] (even lay [added text: ing ] aside interest) to make this representation to your Excellency, fondly hop [deleted text: e ] [added text: ing ] that your Excellency will direct a fort to be built in said Town and that a magazine of arms and amunition [ammunition] in such quantity as your Excellency shall think proper may be there deposited for the use and benefit of the Inhabitants of said County many of whom will be compelled to fly for the want of [deleted text: [illegible text] ] [added text: both. ] and altho [although] it may seem strange to your Excellency that citizens upon a frontier should not be provided with those necessary implements for self defense yet, we beg leave to observe that not more than one third of the able bodied effective men in this vicinity are at [added text: this ] alarming moment accoutred & equipt [equipped] the constant emigrations from other states make our Citizens numerous, but they unfortunately come without arms or amunition [ammunition] ; expecting to provide themselves when ever they may want, and, we assure your Excellency that at this time there is not a pound of powder to be purchased in this place! nor has the militia upon an average a load to a man!
A volunteer artillery company has been here formed an official certificate of which (if your Excellency has not already) will soon receive, this is therefore to request that your Excellency would be pleased to direct that one or more of the brass artillery pieces with apperatus [apparatus] &c [et cetera] now at Augusta may be sent [added text: to ] this place, a blockhouse is now formed at private expense and we fondly hope that with a proper support from Government which we have no doubt of receiving we shall be able (under God) to defend the most populous part of Georgia, and the most fertile soil upon earth, should your Excellency see fit to grant our request your petitioners will ever conceive it an act of commiseration to the [unclear text: distressed ], and as in duty bound will every pray.
