Chickasaw Nation
July 28th 1786
Sir
When I left georgia the Hon. legislature of that State directed me on my return home to Call on those Two Nations and endeavour [endeavor] to Establish a lasting peace with them. I found the task no ways difficult, it appear'd [appeared] to be there [their] wish, but whilst I was about it the Creeks began to do Mischeife [Mischief], and disagreable [disagreeable] as it is I found it Nesecrary [Necessary] to remain among them as there was no person in this quarter to speak in Our behalf and not thinking matters would have Lain silent as long as they have -- M.Gilvary has frequently sent his talks into the Two Nations Pressing them Very hard to [unclear text: Win ] them laying Down Many [unclear text: reasons ] [unclear text: that realy [really] ] might look Feuseable [Feasible] to a savage, but they would hear none of there [their] talks unless I was present and my oppinion [opinion] first asked before they would give an answer, which was always a positive refuseal [refusal] to haveing [having] any thing to do with the War -- 150 [unclear text: Waponcheys ] came about Twenty Days ago and wanted to sit down in this land. Tho [Though] they refused them, and ordered them to the other side of the Ohio. Said they were a bad people, and would do some mischeife [mischief] and they should be blamed
M.Gilvary is Now at new Orleans on some buisiness [business] with the Governor, and His Excellancy [Excellency] have sent for the Indians

That wair [wear] British Medals to come and give them up and take Spanish Ones or he must stop the Trade, the greater part have Refused, and say there whole dependence must be on us. Therefore I am in hopes you can in answer to the talk they send Answer them in such a manner as may satisfy them as I can do a great deal with them by a letter, from your Quarter -- I shall thank you to let me know what is going on in Amaraca as I am ordered to remain here until I hear from Georgia, and as that passage is so stoped [stopped] fear it may be some time first. I heard from a friend in Moabile the other day an Express on its way to me was taken and carried into pensacola -- you must excuse my letter as the king of the land is waiting [unclear text: to ] carry it to the [unclear text: bearer ] and seems very uneasy. Nothing shall Transpire here worth Communicateing [Communicating] but you shall hear, as soon as an Indian can get to you -- [unclear text: they wery [worry] ] the Army Moves pray let me know -- There are some French Boats in the [unclear text: Tenesee ] River supplying The Cherokees with amunition [ammunition], if they were Removed they could get no Supply.
I have the Honour [Honor] to be [unclear text: etc. etc. ]
