Cornet Smith who commands at Fort Clark reports that on the 14th Instant his sentinel fired at an Indian who was trailed several miles over the Oconee River -- that on the 17th Instant the trail of two were seen their side of the Oconee which trail He Lost after following on them five Miles that the eighteenth his spies discovered near the Appalatchia River the trails of about 10 Indiens [Indians], and that on their return he went to the pursuit but found They had too far the Start to have any expectation of overtaking them: -- I do not learn any depredation those Indians have committed.
The apprehension I am in of some parties of Indians comming [coming] in for mischief will preven [prevent] my having the satisfaction of attending on you Sir at Major Abercrombies, as my presence here may be necessary. etc: etc:
