To the Honourable [Honorable] the Speaker and Representatives in General Assembly [unclear text: Met ] . -- -- --
The Humble petition of Mary Brown Sheweth [Shows] That By the Voilent [Violent] Attack of a party of Indians on the Habitation of the late Isaac Brown on the long Bluff the
18th day of April 1797, your petitioner is left a helpless Widow with five Small Children That Isaac Brown the Unfortunate Husband of your petitioner fell a Victom [Victim] to the Inhuman Rage of Those Savages in defending his Wife & Infant family when your petitioner was Alone lelft [left] to Avert the Impending Scalping knife That your petitioner in her Tender Endeavours [Endeavors] was Grievously Wounded in the Shoulder when Col. Lawson with Very Great danger Rescued her and her Infants from further Bodily harm -- -- -- But all the Household Goods with the Necessaries of your petitioners Family was Caried [Carried] off by this Cruel Band by which and the wound receved [received] by your petitioner She is Reduced to -- Extream [Extreme] Hardship and Distress and Rendered incapable of Affording Necessary Assistance to her Children -- And Therefore Cry's to your Honourable [Honorable] Body to -- Aleviate [Alleviate] her's and Weeping Orphan's Sufferings By -- affording her and them some small assistance -- and she will Ever pray, &C: [et cetera]
