- This is a letter dated March 5, 1806 from Cherokee headmen The Glass, Dick Justice, John Bogs, and Charles Hicks (acting as interpreter) to the United States Agent to the Cherokees, Colonel Return J. Meigs. The letter requests that Meigs pay, with Cherokee funds, the one hundred and fifty dollar fee owed to a Dr. McNeel(e), who was sent to inoculate the Cherokee without their authorization.

as we have not employed Doctor McNeel to innoculate [inoculate] our people which is oweing [owing] to the impossibility of the patients attending to the Doctors [unclear text: Directions ] therefore you will please to pay the Doctor McNeels Charges which is one Hundred &; fifty Dollars &; Charge it to the nation we did not Expect to have seen the doctor here, as we never sent for one [ Note: Several lines of X's appear below. ]
