- This is a letter dated December 1808 at Savannah from Levi Sheftall to John Mason, Superintendent of Indian Affairs (1807-1816). In the letter, Sheftall indicates that he is transmitting accounts which include a charge for two hundred dollars for the trouble of storing an unknown number of deer skins, ostensibly acquired from trade with the Indians. The account referred to is no longer attached but is probably krc159. Mason's reply to this letter is probably document krc158.

herewith you will receive my accounts with your department, you will please notice that I have charged the Smaul [Small] Sum of two hundred dollars for my Extra trouble with the [deleted text: [illegible text] ] deer Skins & storage which I can assure you is very low [deleted text: when Even my bed chamber was troubled with the remains and the ] the disagreable [disagreeable] Smell, and trouble was [deleted text: to ] Great -- but Knowing the Charge for the Negroes hire for so long a time made me relinquish part of my Charge- I hope nothing of the kinde [kind] will Ever happen again, as I am Greatly in Advance, I must request you will furnish me with money to discharge the debts for money borrowed it will be proper for me to have funds ready to pay any demand, I have in the whole of my transportation this year made a Saving of 522 $ to the U.S. to what it was last year -- You will please let me have your acknowledgement [acknowledgment], I flatter my Self you will [added text: finde [find] ] Every thing Correct-
