Governor Schley
Dear Sir
My neighbor Mr. Joseph Espey who received & receipted for in his own name $258.47 cts [cents] of the money set & part for paying claimants under the provisions of the Indian Spring Treaty -- Having become satisfyed [satisfied] (as I have heretofore informed you) that there was a mistake in the allowance of said claim, as the same items of property was paid for, to the heirs of his deceased father Thomas Espey -- He therefore upon my assuring him, that you would receive back the above named sum & give him a proper receipt for the same, has concluded herewith to send you the money -- If he doese [does] so, you will please to send him a satisfactory receipt, which will exhibit the transaction in its true light -- This is due to Mr. Espey, on account of his honesty in the matter, as well as to shield him from impropper [improper] imputations.

I am fully convinced that the mistake was orriginated [originated], without any improper intention on the part of Mr. Espey -- I explained the matter to you when at Milledgeville last, but if your recollection should fail you in relation to the subject, you will please to apply to Mr. Cuthbert, with whom I have corresponded on the subject, & whose reccollection [recollection] will no doubt be distinct.

I am Dr. [Dear] Sir very respectfully Yr. Obt. Servt. [Your Obedient Servant]
