Department of War,

26th. July, 1817.
Sir,
The reverend Elias Cornelius, who is the agent of the American board of Commissioners for Foreign missions, proposes to visit the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Chactaw and Creek nations of Indians, with a view of ascertaining how far those tribes would be disposed to encourage and give support to institutions for the instruction of their children in the English language, in agriculture, and in the domestic arts. I have therefore to request, that you will afford to him all the faculties in your power, towards the accomplishment of the objects of his mission. Should the Board, on his representation, determine to make an establishment within your agency, this department will afford to it that aid which has been given to an institution in the Cherokee nation, under the direction of Mr. Kingsbury.

I have the honor to be, with great respect, your Obt. [Obedient] Servant.
[Signed] Geo: [George] Graham
David B. Mitchell, Esqr.} Creek agent.}
