NB [Nota Bene] Be pleased to forward the accompanying letters to Fort Hawkins. The irregularity of the mail is of a very serious nature, I am almost inclined to believe that its failure is not Entirely owing to unavoidable accident but to the [deleted text: [illegible text] ] [added text: want ] of Energy. Travellers pass & repass on horseback with all apparent facility. The Rider last, told [added text: me ] his horse tired, this can be no appology [apology] .

[unclear text: Chanbulle ] Creek
16 March 1818
Majr [Major] D Hughes
Sir --
I have the honor of writing to you again as I promised I would do so -- I went down to the Creek [unclear text: Chanbulle ] on the
12th day of March about Ten miles above [unclear text: Cunfaltee Micco ] or the Red ground Chief & the Creek swamp was so bad we could not cross it for the high waters & my men had to leave their clothing and provisions and swim better than one half of the swamp about six miles wide & we marched within about two miles of his station and the next morning we surrounded his place and he was gone & we could not follow him untill [until] we could get some provisions we had left behind us as I tell you & I & Majr [Major] Hawkins followed and overtook him & his party & he got away from us with about thirty men & we took about fifty three men & 180 women and children prisoners without the fire of a Gun and we killed ten men that broke to try & make them escape & I have not lost a man since I left Fort Mitchell -- . He would not have got away from us but he had some cattle on hand he tryd [tried] to drive them out of our way and I sent about 100 of my men to take him and his cause & they came in sight of him being he and his party were well mounted on Horses they got away, we got what cattle he had with him taken away from him, we are very scarce of provisions & I have to send the women & children up into our nation as for the men I am going to take them to Genl [General] Jackson, now there is no danger on the east side of the Chatehoche river as this was all the party that was on the side we have to look for our enemy on the west side of the River now. if I had provisions for my warriors I would go on to the Mickausukey with them only -- I will Know better what to do when I cross the Chatehoche River you will be as good to inform my head men & agent of this I send to you friend & Brother.

[Signed] Gen Wm. [William] McIntosh [unclear text: Comd. [Commander] ] the Creek Indians

[Signed] [unclear text: Saml [Samuel] ] Hawkins Majr [Major] of the Batalion [Battalion]
