- This is a letter written to Cherokee agent Colonel Return J. Meigs from Tennessee Governor John Sevier (1796-1801, 1803-1809) on August 5, 1804. The letter states that commissioners from Tennessee and Georgia are to meet at James Vann's on the fifteenth of the month in order to make arrangements for a road, to be run through the Cherokee Nation, that will connect the two states. Sevier asks Meigs to notify the chiefs of this meeting and let the Georgia commissioners know that the Tennessee commissioners may be late.

Our Commissioners for the purpose of marking and laying off the road from Tennessee through the Indian Nation into the State of Georgia, are preparing to meet those [deleted text: of ] [added text: from ] that State at James Vans on the
15th instant --
I have deemed it proper to give you this information, in order that you may avail Your self [Yourself] of [deleted text: any ] an opportunity of giving the necessary information to the Indian Cheifs [Chiefs] that they may attend -- I beg you will be so oblidging [obliging] as to Write on to Vans, leting [letting] the Commissioners [deleted text: know ] of Georgia know, those from Tennessee will soon be on -- if not on the day, in a very short time afterwards.
