Nathaniel Howel Executor of Nathaniel Howel [added text: decd [deceased] ] being duly sworn in open Court Deposeth and saith that about the year of
1784 Deponents father was possessed of Two Negro men slaves the one named Ned about Twenty five years old and the other a named Sam about Twenty years of age and as Deponent is informed & verily believes a shot gun which is said to be worth Twenty dollars and the said Negroes Deponent is advised & verily believes to be worth [deleted text: fifteen hundred ] [added text: one thousand ] dollars - which said Two Negroe men and the shot gun aforesaid Deponent from the Information of others believes were about the time aforesaid taken & carried away the Creek Indians out of the County of Wilkes to the Creek nation and Deponent is informed & verily believes said Two Negroes were in the possession of the Creek Indians. for many years Thereafter and may be now unless sold or unless they are dead - Deponent believes that said Negroes have been frequently seen in the Creek nation and the Testator of this Deponent has informed him that said Negroes had been formerly demanded of the Creek Nation at the Treaty of Coleraine & he verily believes they have not been delivered or paid for

Present Nicholas Lewis Thomas Stocks and Clayborn Maddox Esqr
Ann Howell being duly sworn in open Court Deposeth and saith That in the year of
1784 her husband Nathaniel Howell was possessed of Two Negroe men the one named Ned about Twenty five years of age and another named Sam about Twenty years of age of the value of [deleted text: fifteen hundred dollars ] [added text: one Thousand ] and a shot gun of the value of Twenty dollars. That said Two Negroe men and shot gun, this Deponent believes was about that time taken & carried away from the County of Wilkes to the Creek nation by the Creek Indians. That after said Negroes were taken & carried away a certain Indian trader from the Creek nation and who resided there, came to the house of the said Nathaniel Howel her husband & states that said Negroes were in the Creek nation. that said Negroes had told him to whom they belonged and were desirous of returning to their master, that said Trader who resided in the nation and had an Indian family proposed to purchase said Two Negroe men of her husband Nathaniel Howel now deceased, that her husband refused to sell said Negroes Whereupon he the said Indian Trader whose name Deponent has heard and believes was Tim Barnett proposed to her husband to bring back one of said Negroes provided he Howell would give him the other Which said Howell agreed to do, if said Barnett

would take Ned & deliver Sam to said Howell but Barnett insisted on reversing it, which was not agreed to, said Howell believeing [believing] that said Negroes would be delivered up at the Treaty of Colerain which was soon thereafter to be holden- At which Treaty said Howell attended and demanded his Negroes as Deponent believes of the Creek nation in Council but which Negroes were not returned or given up- The length of time that has elapsed since these transactions occurred, and the death of Two or Three Individuals who [deleted text: [illegible text] ] [added text: knew ] said Negroes [added text: to be ] in the Creek nation and who knew said Negroes to be the property of Nathaniel Howell decd [deceased] forbids Deponent affording any additional testimony
