- This document is an 1837 list of black freemen and slaves captured by Creek Indians. The Creeks were likely in the service of the U.S. Army during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), and the captives were probably African Seminoles and slaves taken from Seminole towns in Florida. For each person captured, information is provided regarding name, sex, age, height, place captured, by whom captured, date captured, owner's name and miscellaneous remarks. A note on the back of the roll chart, signed by Gen. Thomas S. Jesup, indicates that to prevent the Indians from killing the captives, they were encouraged to return them for a reward. The twenty dollar payment for each person returned was to be made by Captain Searle to the chiefs.
