- Description:
- Mildred Delaney Slemons Arnall, wife of Governor Ellis Arnall of Georgia, at the launching of the Joseph R. Lamar. She is swinging a champagne bottle at the boat's bow during a ceremonial Liberty ship launching in the shipyard of the J.A. Jones Construction Company in Brunswick, Georgia. Workers (some in hard hats) can be seen beneath the dais. Named for U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Joseph Rucker Lamar (1857-1916), the ship was the third constructed in Brunswick by the J.A. Jones Construction Company. Its keel was laid April 17, 1944. The ship was launched April 29, 1943 and delivered June 17, 1943.
