- Mildred DeLaney Slemons Arnall, wife of Governor Ellis Arnall of Georgia, christening the Joseph R. Lamar during a ceremonial Liberty ship launching in the shipyard of the J.A. Jones Construction Company in Brunswick, Georgia. The governor stands behind her as she begins to swing the bottle. Named for U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Joseph Rucker Lamar (1857-1916), the ship was the third constructed in Brunswick by the J.A. Jones Construction Company. Its keel was laid April 17, 1943. The ship was launched April 29, 1943 and delivered June 17, 1943.
