- Dalton, ca. 1890s. Dr. John Fergus Groves (1822-1902). Before he attended the Medical College of Georgia, he asked Dr. Crawford W. Long to take him on as a medical student. He assisted Dr. Long in some of his work involving the use of ether as an anesthetic during surgery. During the civil war he served as a captain, and later as a major, in Co. I, 1st Regiment Georgia Infantry, State Guards. In addition to his medical practice, he operated a drugstore in Dalton.
