- ca. 1885. Anthony Johnson Showalter (1858-1924) came to Dalton in 1884. He had been trained as a musician and was a composer, teacher, and publisher. In 1890 he established the A. J. Showalter Co., Printers, Binders & Music Publishers. The company printed hymnals, songbooks, schoolbooks, magazines, and some newspapers in addition to the binding operation. One of the most well-known pieces written by A. J. Showalter is "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." He is said to have been a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
