- "Wilkes County, 1913. Black Baptist Baptismal Service. 48 folks in the water. Rev. R.W. White baptizing at New Salem Baptist Church. He organized (the church) by Phillip Mill Church (which was a white church) around 1882. Man with black hat Gus Jackson who farmed with Jim M. Griffin (who was white). Jackson was probably a sharecropper. Note people gathered on bank. Located west of Washington on Rt. 44."--from field notes
