- Washington. Home of Robert Toombs located on East Toombs Avenue. Built in 1794 by Joel Abbott who came from Connecticut. Toombs purchased it in 1837. He added the colonnade, western wing, and eastern wing.
2003/7/21: Robert Augustus Toombs was born in Wilkes County, GA on July 2, 1810. He was a lawyer and served as a member of Georgia state house of representatives from 1837-43. He was the U.S. Representative from Georgia's 8th District from 1845 to 1853. Robert Toombs then served as a U.S. Senator from Georgia from 1853-1861. In 1861, he was a delegate to the Georgia secession convention. Then, he was a delegate from Georgia to the Confederate Provisional Congress in 1861-62 where he also served as the Confederate Secretary of State in 1861. He was a general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and later served as a delegate to Georgia state constitutional convention in 1877. Known as one of the greatest orators of his time, Robert Toombs fled to Europe at the end of the Civil War to avoid arrest by Union forces. Suspected of involvement in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, Toombs was never formally charged. He died in Washington, Wilkes County, GA. on December 15, 1885. Robert Toombs is buried at Rest Haven Cemetery in Washington, GA. Toombs County, GA. is named for him. - External Identifiers:
